What makes a report card worth sending

  • The class average is the whole point. A mark on its own tells a parent nothing. 68 next to a class average of 54 tells them their child is doing well; 68 next to 79 tells them something else entirely.
  • Attendance belongs on the same page as marks. Falling marks and falling attendance almost always arrive together, and seeing them side by side is the earliest warning either of you gets.
  • One honest line beats five polite ones. Parents discount praise they have read before. A specific sentence about what to do next is what gets acted on.
  • Send it the same week. A report card that arrives a fortnight after the test is a record. One that arrives the next day is a conversation.
